More inclusive stem group containing Sphenodon and its close relatives _ Rhynchocephala.
First appear in fossil record _ late Triassic (~210-220 mya).

- 2 extant species (S. punctatus & S. guntheri)
- Formerly on North and South Islands of New Zealand
- Now restricted to small offshore islands
