CERTIFICATE IN BIOTECHNOLOGY
Our biotechnology training program is designed to introduce
undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, and postdoctoral students
and technicians to state-of-the-art techniques used in molecular
biological research laboratories as well as to qualify certificate
recipients for employment in various sectors of the biotechnological
arena.
In order to enter the certificate program, you must be
accepted as a student by the Office of Admissions. If you
already possess a bachelor's degree, you must enter the
University as a graduate student. However, there is no need
to pursue an advanced degree, unless you wish to. A limited
number of courses may be taken through the Open University.
Matriculated students must apply for admission to the program
before completion of 15 certificate units and must complete
all prerequisite and required courses with a GPA of 2.5
or better and required courses Biology 551 and Biology 552
with grades of B or better.
The certificate requires 13 prerequisite units - Biology
350, 366, 366L, Chemistry 365 and 24-28 certificate units
including Biology 467, 498 or 499 (5 units as approved by
the certificate advisor), 551, 552, 594, Chemistry 467L
and three electives selected from Biology 521, 521L, 549,
554, 569, 570, 575, 580, 584, 585, 590 and 598. Biology
551 and 552 must be taken at San Diego State University,
either in residence or through Open University. Prerequisite
and certificate courses may be utilized in the biology,
chemistry and microbiology majors and minors as appropriate.

BIOTECHNOLOGY GRADUATE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
This program allows students to earn an M.S. degree in
Molecular Biology and perform their M.S. thesis project
at local biotechnology companies that provide graduate support
in the form of fellowships. This internship program is administered
by the Molecular Biology Institute. Admission and graduation
criteria are the same as for the regular M.S. program. Thesis
research is performed under the guidance of industry scientists
who are appointed adjunct faculty members at SDSU. Interested
students or company representatives can obtain further information

Ph.D. AND M.S. DEGREE PROGRAMS IN CHEMISTRY
A number of MBI faculty participate in the degree programs available in the Chemistry
Department. The department offers both the M.S. and the Ph.D. degree which is jointly
administered with the University of California, San Diego and is similar in most
regards to the Ph.D. program in Biology.
