Subject: Communication
with Students about Influenza
As we enter this year's
influenza season, which will yield illness due to the H1N1 epidemic beyond
illness from the usual seasonal flu, I ask all faculty members to exercise good
judgment in their communication with students who have or report having
flu-like symptoms. We do not want to risk exposing the campus community
to illness by requiring students to attend classes or go to health providers,
including Student Health Services, for medical verification. It is
dangerous to require highly infectious students to be in class so they can take
a test, turn in an assignment or simply show up for a roll call. The best
advice to give students is to isolate themselves if they are experiencing flu-like
symptoms.
Our student population is
at highest risk of contracting the H1N1 flu, with rates in 15-29 year olds five
times that of people over age 59; 60-70 percent of flu cases are occurring in
the 24-and-under age group.
Please observe the advice
of health experts: Do not require students to seek medical excuses for illness,
and communicate to students that they should NOT attend classes if they are ill
with an influenza-like illness until they have had no fever for at least 24
hours without the use of a fever-reducing medication.
