CATCH
THE WAVE
Catch the Wave is a chance to learn more about the health
profession. If you are a pre health student you should attend to
learn more about applying, how to get in, networking with specific
schools of interest, more about your future career and meeting more
students just like you.
See our website to find out more info about this great opportunity.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Research
Ethics Seminar Series
Wednesday, April 9th, 12-1 pm
All sessions will take place in the Alan and Debbie
Gold Auditorium in the BioScience Center.
The upcoming
April presentation concerns mentoring:
Good Mentoring
Relationships: What Do Those Look Like?
What does it mean to be a mentor?
What does it mean to get mentoring?
Two of our panelists for this presentation will each present a case
involving an issue of mentoring. The audience will then break into small
groups to talk further about the issues brought up in the cases. For the
conclusion of the presentation, the panelists will reconvene to address
what the audience identified as the most pertinent issues.
We look forward to seeing you there!
THE SAN DIEGO CHAPTER OF THE NORSE FEDERATION
Presents
Infectious Diseases in the American Civil War
Barbara Bruff Hemmingsen, Ph.D.
Emerita Professor of Microbiology
San Diego State University
Unlike the peaceful split of Norway from Sweden in 1905, the
desire of the slave-holding Southern states in America to form their own
nation erupted in violence shortly after the election of Abraham
Lincoln. The Civil War that resulted, 1861-1865, involved millions
of men, about 6000 of whom were Norwegian immigrants in the Union
Army. This war has been studied in depth by generations of scholars
and amateurs alike, with the battles endlessly analyzed and battle
casualties tallied on both sides. Often overlooked is the
staggering number of deaths from infectious diseases. This lecture
will focus on these diseases and their causes and treatments. The
impact on the soldiers will be illustrated by quotes from the civil war
letters of Joseph Bruf Barbara's great-great-grandfather, who was an
officer in the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
Date: Saturday, April 12, 2008
Location: The Hall of Nations, House of Pacific Relations, Balboa
Park
Time: 5:30 pm
The lecture is open to the public.
Suggested donation for lecture only, $5
Suggested donation for lecture and dinner, $15

IPP Training this April
Most of you recall the safety training Bruce Wingerd presented
each Fall and Spring semester. Environmental Health and Safety has
taken over this safety training and has split the training into two
separate areas of regulatory interest. Cal OSHA Injury and Illness
Prevention Program and SD County HMD Hazardous Materials and Waste
Management. EH&S will be presenting the IIPP portion of the
training on the dates and times listed below in the Gold Auditorium of
the BSC building.
All Biology employees are required to attend
the IIPP training. There will be a sign-in sheet at the
training that requires you to provide your red ID number. You need
go to only one of these presentations.
The IIPP training dates and times to choose from are:

Employees who work with hazardous materials and generate hazardous wastes
need to take an additional on-line course that covers the Hazardous
Materials and Waste Management. you will be able to access the
on-line training through Blackboard very soon. The course is
complete, but the administrative details surrounding tracking are being
ironed out. I will let you know the next step.
See you at the presentations.
