Message to Prospective StudentsI joined the faculty at Arizona State University in Fall 2009. I am jointly appointed in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning and the School of Life Sciences faculty group in Ecology Evolution and Environmental Science. I am recruiting graduate students at ASU for Fall 2010. Students interested in joining my lab should: a) read the web page of the graduate program you are interested in, b) read about my research on my web page and my project pages (you can find some of our published work there), and then, c) contact me by email and let me know what your research interests and professional objectives are, and a bit about your background. Please attach a CV or resume (including GPA and GRE scores), and/or a draft of your graduate school application Statement of Purpose. The next step will be to set up a telephone interview. Some current projects from which students might develop graduate research include a computer modeling-based study in Land Use Change and Biodiversity, and the use of species distribution models to study the impacts of global change on biotic distributions. Tools and and methods developed in a recently completed study could be used in for this type of research. Futher, there are new research opportunities to explore at my new professional home, ASU, that are rich in geospatial data and ecological questions, for example associated with the Central Arizona Project Long Term Ecological Research program (CAP LTER). The tools used in my lab to study plant community patterns and dynamics on landscapes include a combination of field surveys, remote sensing, GIS, computer simulation modeling, and spatial, statistical and multivariate data analysis methods. I am particularly interested in students who have strong foundations in these areas, as well as basic ecology and botany, or are highly motivated to learn them! Potential Graduate Degree ProgramsI supervise students seeking graduate degrees in geography and ecology. I will be accepting graduate students at ASU for Fall 2010 in the graduate programs of the School of Geographical Sciences, the Ph.D. Program in Environmental Life Sciences and the Integrated Graduate Education in Life Sciences concentration in Ecology. Please read those web pages carefully regarding these programs, their requirements, deadlines and application process. Please email me if you have any questions. |
